How to choose a filename for a document pack
By PDFEditor.ae · Published
A simple pattern
Use: what it is – who or what it concerns – date (year-month-day) – version if needed. For example: "invoice-1042-acme-2026-10-08.pdf" or "proposal-website-redesign-2026-10-v2.pdf".
Rules that prevent problems
- Year-month-day dates sort correctly in any folder.
- Use letters, numbers and hyphens; some upload forms reject spaces, slashes and symbols.
- Keep it short enough to read in an email attachment list.
- Avoid "final", "final2", "really-final" — use v1, v2.
Leave personal details out
File names travel further than the file: they appear in email previews, upload logs and folder listings. Avoid ID numbers, dates of birth and full names unless the recipient asked for them in the name.
Packs and parts
When you split a document, number the parts: "contract-acme-2026-10-part1-of-3.pdf". When you merge, name the result after the whole pack.
