How to add text to a PDF form that has no fields
By PDFEditor.ae · Published
Flat forms versus fillable forms
A fillable PDF has interactive boxes you can click and type into. A flat form only looks like a form — often a scan or a document exported without fields. To complete it digitally, you place your answers as text on top of the page. Check first that the organisation accepts a form completed this way.
Steps
- Keep a blank copy of the form for next time.
- Open Fill PDF and upload the form.
- Choose Add Text, click inside the first box and type one answer.
- Adjust the size so the answer fits inside the box, then drag it into line.
- Use Shapes → Check mark for tick boxes, and the Sign tool if a signature is needed.
- Download the completed form under a new file name.
Practical example
On a registration form with a narrow address line, type the full address once and reduce the size until it sits inside the box at a readable size. If it still does not fit, ask the recipient how they want extra information rather than squeezing it into tiny text.
A mistake to avoid
Adding text does not turn a flat form into a fillable one: the recipient cannot click your answers to edit them, and you cannot clear them easily either. That is why you keep the blank master copy.
Can the recipient change my answers?
Your answers are drawn onto the page when you download, so they are not form fields. Someone with a PDF editor could still cover or add text, as with any PDF. If that matters, add a password with Protect PDF.
