How to make a PDF CV small enough to upload
By PDFEditor.ae · Published
Start from a clean export
A CV should be small, but it also needs real, selectable text that recruiters and recruiting software can read. Export it from Word, Google Docs or your design tool with "Save as PDF" rather than printing to an image or scanning a printout.
Steps
- Export the CV as a PDF from its source file.
- If it is too big, replace large photos or decorative backgrounds with smaller versions and export again.
- Run Compress PDF and check the new size against the portal's limit.
- Open the PDF, search for your name and check headings and contact details are readable.
Test the text, not just the size
Run the CV through PDF to Word. It copies out the text layer in reading order — a quick way to see whether your job titles, dates and contact details come out complete and in sequence.
A mistake to avoid
Do not turn the CV into images to make it smaller or "lock" the design — image-only pages have no text for software to read. For the same reason, avoid fixing typos in a CV with our Edit Text tool: it saves the edited page as an image. Correct the source document and export again.
Should I remove all graphics?
No. Keep the ones that help, at a sensible size. Clear content and reading order matter more than a bare design.
