How to handle a PDF that exceeds an upload limit
By PDFEditor.ae · Published
Read the limit carefully
Upload forms usually state a maximum size per file, and sometimes a total. Some also restrict the file type or page count. Use the numbers the form actually shows — limits differ between services and change over time, so do not rely on what someone told you.
Fixes, in the order to try them
- Run Compress PDF. It is lossless, so it is safe to try first; it helps most with text-heavy files.
- Remove pages the form did not ask for, such as blank pages or covers, with Delete Pages.
- If the PDF is made of photos, resize the photos and rebuild it with JPG to PDF — compression will not shrink photos.
- If the form accepts several files, split the document into logical parts with Extract Pages.
Do not damage the document to make it fit
Avoid shrinking images so far that stamps, signatures or reference numbers become unreadable — a rejected document costs more time than a large one. After each step, open the file and check it at 100% zoom.
Splitting into parts
Extract Pages copies a page range into a new PDF, so you can make one file per section (for example pages 1-6 and 7-12). Name each part clearly so the reviewer knows the order.
